Relive moments of triumph, talent, and a touch of the untamed as you dive into the layered history of Liberty City, a beating heartbeat of Miami's Black legacy.
Storied, resilient, and refreshingly unapologetic, Liberty City is a historic neighborhood that proudly wears decades of cultural and civil rights history like a badge that time can't tarnish.
Here, you'll find rows of modest homes, bursts of street art honoring Black icons, and the steady hum of local life along NW 62nd Street, amidst residents who uphold the legends that Liberty City has birthed and the movements it fueled.
But its jazz tunes, bold murals, and challenges aren't the only things that make Liberty City a cornerstone of African American life in South Florida.
Stick with us, and we'll reveal unexpected things about Liberty City that prove there's always more than meets the eye.
Here are five things you may not know about Liberty City.

Wall to Wow
Back in the 1930s, Miami's big idea for keeping Liberty City's new Black residents "in check" was to drop an 8-foot concrete wall right along NW 12th Avenue—Jim Crow architecture at its most literal.
Fast forward to 2018, and local legend Tarell Alvin McCraney wasn't about to let that eyesore keep whispering old insults.
He rallied neighborhood kids to trace its outline and splash it with bright, bold stories of their own, transforming segregation's handiwork into a giant canvas of pride.
Now it stands as proof that Liberty City doesn't just cope with history—it picks up a paintbrush and completely flips the script.
A racist barrier turned street art gallery? Only in Liberty City.

Broadway, Liberty City-Style
Long before neon beach clubs were the vibe, Liberty City's 15th Avenue was so alive with Black-owned clubs, diners, and juke joints that folks nicknamed it "Broadway."
During segregation, big-name artists who dazzled Miami Beach crowds by day slipped into Liberty City at night for food, drinks, and after-hours shows they couldn't enjoy elsewhere.
The music scene was electric, the culture unstoppable, and local talent bloomed right alongside the legends.
Today, Miami-Dade's renaming streets after hometown icons like Trick Daddy, Betty Wright, and Trina — an ode to Liberty City's still-kicking music legacy.
Who needs Times Square when your block parties made history?

Liberty City's Own Barrier Breaker
In a neighborhood full of grit and heart, Athalie Range stood out by smashing through barriers most people wouldn't even dare to poke.
As a determined PTA mom in the '50s, she fought tooth and nail to rebuild Liberty City's rundown, segregated schools, then took it a notch up by becoming Miami's first Black city commissioner and its first woman since the city was founded.
Not satisfied with local wins, she made history again as Florida's first Black person and first woman to lead a state agency.
Through it all, she ran the family funeral home right in Liberty City and mentored kids who'd dream even bigger because of her.
Her name might be on parks and plaques now, but the real story? Liberty City raised a powerhouse who changed the game from her backyard.

Peace, Parties, and Bass Drops
If there's ever an "official" Liberty City hype man, it would have to be DJ Uncle Al who threw block parties that packed streets with thousands.
But his jams weren't about flashing bling or stirring beef; he cranked out "peace in the hood" anthems that kept vibes high and drama low.
Even after he passed in 2001, the community still celebrates him every year through Uncle Al Day, a street fest that turns local love into living history.

Nope, Not That Liberty City
Every so often, someone jokes, "Oh, like Grand Theft Auto?" when you say Liberty City and Miami locals roll their eyes.
Newsflash: GTA's Liberty City is a knockoff of New York, not this sun-baked slice of Miami with murals, mango trees, and block parties that have permits.
Still, the name mix-up's kinda funny, especially when out-of-towners think the real Liberty City is crawling with pixelated car chases.
The truth is, the only guaranteed chase in this city is kids racing each other down the street.
So yep, wrong Liberty City—this one has better pastelitos!
