Set aside the mirrored cafés and high-gloss markets for the sun-warmed fields, dirt-road detours, and homegrown flavor of The Redlands, a stretch of rustic charm and agricultural backbone in the outback of Miami.

Named after its pockets of red clay that cover a layer of oolitic limestone, The Redlands, also known as Redland or the Redland, is an unincorporated community and a patchwork of farmland and history in rural southern Miami.

Anchored by a large farming belt that produces a variety of tropical fruits, many of which do not grow elsewhere in the continental United States, The Redlands directly adjoins the country's seventh most populous major metropolitan area and boasts a diverse real estate market defined by single-family homes on acreage, farmland properties, equestrian estates, Homestead-style homes, eco-farms, and vacant and development lots.

The Redlands is bordered by Homestead in the south, the suburb of Richmond West in its north, the semi-rural community of Goulds in the east, and the leafy Everglades National Park directly on its west side.

It is home to approximately 28,000 residents as of the latest US Census.

A countryside exists amidst Miami's tropical stillness and sunlit glow in The Redlands, a peaceful rural slice with a vast agricultural area filled with farms and nurseries, one providing a change of pace from the urban sprawl surrounding its perimeter.

Here, locals indulge in a quiet and relaxed atmosphere embellished by expansive open spaces where high-rises and traffic give way to lush farmlands, tropical fruit groves, and wineries, all wrapped in Old Florida's rustic and, sometimes, forgotten allure.

This distinct feature is evident in The Redlands' selection of properties comprising ranch houses, historic clapboard farm homes, a few luxury estates, ranch-style villas, and plenty of land within non-cookie-cutter subdivisions, all often hidden behind swaying palms or orchards.

And as you guessed it, recreation in The Redlands also breaks the Miami mold, as it takes a slower, more grounded route.

We're talking horseback riding at sunrise, picking fruit at a local grove, and exploring quiet trails under a canopy of native trees, worlds away from the usual coastal buzz.

Yes, curious cats, The Redlands is far from your typical Florida community, and a day around this rural haven speaks to its unique beauty and quiet pride.

Start your morning at the Fruit & Spice Park, a 37-acre county park that doubles as a living museum of tropical agriculture.

Housed in a 1906 Redland schoolhouse, the Fruit & Spice Park features 500+ varieties of exotic fruits, spices, herbs, and nuts from around the world in a lush orchard setting, where you can take a guided tram tour to learn about plants, a tasting tour to sample what's in season, and join annual events like the Redland Summer Fruit Festival every June and the Redland International Orchid Festival in May.

It also offers picnic areas and walking trails, making the Fruit & Spice Park a must-visit for tourists looking to experience The Redlands' botanical bounty.

Agritourism is one of the most significant activities in The Redlands (as you may have noticed), which means hopping from one local farm to the other is at the top of The Redlands' to-do list.

Knaus Berry Farm, The Berry Farm, nurseries like R.F. Orchids, and other agri-spots open to public visitations (and picking for farms) — these are the pride and joy of The Redlands; popular destinations where you can pick strawberries and tomatoes in winter, zucchini and squash in spring, lychee and longan fruit in early summer, pumpkin patches in fall, and roam world-renowned orchid nurseries with landscaped gardens year-round.

Want to visit them all? Don't miss the Redland Tropical Trail, an unofficial route that strings together many local attractions, including the Cauley Square Historic Village on its northern edge.

A historic village of old cottages turned boutiques and cafes under a canopy of trees, Cauley Square Historic Village offers garden paths, art shops, and dining spots, including Monkey Jungle, a nearby wildlife park famous for its roaming monkeys in a rainforest enclosure.

Oh, and this is also one of The Redlands' unofficial shopping spots, together with the Redland Market Village, your closest thing to a traditional shopping plaza, but with flea market stalls, Latin street food, and fresh mangos by the crate.

For those seeking one-of-a-kind attractions (not that any of these are common in Miami), Coral Castle is a treat just south of The Redlands.

Located in Homestead, this bizarre and fascinating open-air castle was hand-carved from coral rock by one man (Edward Leedskalnin) as a monument to unrequited love.

While touristy, Coral Castle is a local legend and is worth visiting for its massive Coral stone furniture and structures.

And can we forget Schnebly Redland's Winery & Brewery?

The country's southernmost winery, Schnebly Redland's Winery & Brewery, is celebrated for its exotic tropical fruit wines, beautiful tropical courtyard, and live weekend music jams.

Of course, aside from everything mentioned, The Redlands prides itself in its location just minutes from Homestead's historic downtown, the vibrant markets of Goulds, and the adventurous edges of Everglades and Biscayne National Parks, putting you within easy reach of racing weekends and orchid festivals, to airboat rides and old-town strolls.

You can curate your adventure across these neighboring communities, dip into the energy, and retreat to the quiet whenever you please.

Curious about life in Miami's countryside? It may not be as flashy and glamorous as Miami Beach or as ever-evolving and fast-paced as Downtown Miami, but it comes with a tight-knit, family-centered community and plenty of quirky charm.

    First, let's talk real estate.

Due to county zoning law, most new homes sit on a minimum of 5 acres of land — a rule designed to thwart dense development and preserve The Redlands' rural character.

Here, properties come in an architectural mix that ranges from old Florida vernacular homes and Mediterranean-style estates to contemporary farmhouses, with prices generally starting in the high $600Ks and stretching well past $1.5M, depending on land size, condition, and whether you're buying a functioning grove or a turnkey estate.

As a result, many Redland properties come with groves, gardens, and farmland—ideal for those dreaming of having horses, planting an orchard, or simply enjoying more than enough space to breathe and grow their roots.

But while these homes are far apart, neighbors know each other and often band together, whether for a barn-raising, a seasonal harvest or to rally against unwelcome zoning changes, all sharing a deep pride in The Redlands' uniqueness despite their diverse backgrounds and walks of life.

In fact, it's not unusual for a Redland neighbor to lend you a hand with tractor work or drop off a basket of mangoes when they have a bumper crop.

Another thing The Redlands is known for is its balanced lifestyle.

Ultimately, living in the Redlands means embracing rural tranquility while having access to a major metropolitan area, including local schools like Redland Elementary School, Redland Middle School, South Dade Senior High School in nearby Homestead, and magnet and charter school options such as Medical Academy for Science and Technology and Somerset Academy, among others.

While driving to work or errands may take 30-45 minutes, longer during rush hour, the nearby locales of Homestead and Cutler Bay allow convenience in everyday necessities.

Just don't count on public transportation to get you there.

The Redlands isn't served by major transit lines, and ride-share availability can be a hit or miss, especially on the more rural roads, so a personal vehicle isn't just helpful but essential.

Nevertheless, what you give up in speed, you gain in serenity in a neighborhood where peacocks casually wander across driveways and roadside fruit stands run on the honor system — it's a trade most Redland residents are happy to make.

Living in The Redlands means planning for things city dwellers rarely think about: wells instead of city water, septic tanks over sewer hookups, and the occasional rooster acting as your sunrise alarm clock.

It means summer rains bring out the frogs, fall brings out the fire pits, and mango season turns neighbors into barterers and bakers overnight, a rhythm dictated by nature instead of calendar apps.

Between farm-to-table living, community ties that run deep, and the constant presence of land, sky, and season, life in The Redlands invites you to settle in physically and emotionally.

And if you're looking for something authentic in a county that often chases the next high-rise, The Redlands may be your answer.

It won't ask you to keep up but to show up.

And here, that's more than enough.

In a county where change comes fast and concrete spreads faster, The Redlands offers rarity: room to grow, space to breathe, and a lifestyle that doesn't feel borrowed.

With its acreage, history, and community ties, this rural slice is one of the last places where Miami still feels like Old Florida.

And while it's not the easiest place to get to, once you reach the destination, it's hard to imagine being anywhere else.

So, trade up on peace and down on pace — in The Redlands, the land gives back.
