Florida is a vibrant state home to beautiful beaches, marshlands, diverse wildlife, and family-friendly attractions. Whether you're settling down in a quaint suburb or relocating for a job, you'll find that Florida is filled with opportunities and experiences you and your whole family can enjoy.

As with any major decision, a cross-country move demands research and thoughtful planning.

A few key considerations will help ensure you and your family get the most out of your upcoming relocation.

Here are some things that families planning to move to Florida should consider:

Cost of Living

The cost of living in Florida varies depending on the city.

According to RentCafe, Fort Lauderdale's cost of living is 20% higher than the state average, while Jacksonville's is 6% lower.

Homes near the beach tend to be more expensive than those in inland communities and neighborhoods.

If you have some flexibility about where in the state you live, consider all living expenses.

Many factors influence the overall cost of living in a given area, including:

  • Utilities

  • Transportation

  • Goods, Services, and Food

  • Housing

The most significant expense in any move is renting or buying a home.

Housing in Florida is about 4% higher than the national average

However, utilities, healthcare, and other services tend to be slightly more affordable than in other states.

Planning your budget well in advance is an excellent way to reduce moving costs as you relocate to Florida.

Here are some tips to help you budget for your move:

  • Create a Moving Plan

  • Clear Out Clutter to Minimize Moving Costs

  • Pick a City and Neighborhood Based on Your Budget

  • Research Trustworthy Moving Companies and Compare Quotes with Competitors

Housing Market

Interest rates, mortgages, and rent can fluctuate depending on current economic trends—often even from city to city. According to Redfin, the median sale price of a Florida home was up 3% year over year in October 2023, with the current median price of $403,700. The most competitive cities for real estate are Oviedo, Alafaya, and Carrollwood.

Some of the best neighborhoods in Florida for combining affordability and family-friendly living include:

  • Nocatee in Jacksonville, Florida

  • Monarch Lakes in Miramar, Florida

  • Arbor Greene in Tampa, Florida

When exploring housing while also looking to reduce moving expenses you may want to consider renting or shorter-term housing options until you find a home that can accommodate your family's needs and fit your budget. Exploring different neighborhoods, getting a feel for the vibe, and finding your perfect fit are all part of a temporary living arrangement.

Education System

Whether your kids are entering kindergarten or finishing their last year of high school, the school system you enroll them in will be vital to their future success. According to US News, Florida is ranked #1 in the nation for higher education and #14 for K–12. Many Florida cities have highly-ranked school districts.

When exploring schools for your children, you'll want to consider:

  • Proximity to your home

  • School Resources

  • Enrichment Opportunities

  • After-School activities

Climate and Geography

Florida is warm year-round, with high humidity during spring and summer. During the winter, temperatures can range anywhere from 41 to 65 degrees, depending on where you are inland. While the Sunshine State may not have the traditional four seasons, Floridians typically enjoy the warm weather and spend more time outside or at the beach, even during winter.

Of course, Florida is susceptible to hurricanes and tropical storms. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. The area typically experiences a hurricane or tropical storm every 3–5 years. If you aren't used to this weather, you'll want to educate yourself and your family on proper hurricane preparedness tips. Here's what you'll want to do before moving into your new home:

  • Create an Emergency Plan

  • Invest in Flood Insurance

  • Have an Emergency Kit with Food, Water, and Medical Supplies

  • Put Your Important Files and Documents in a Safe, Reachable Spot

While hurricane season can be scary, a little preparation can go a long way to keeping your home and family safe.

Recreational & Cultural Bliss

Florida is the place to be for events, outdoor activities, and year-round attractions. Orlando is famed for Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort, but the state offers plenty of other attractions, cultural events, and activities, including the Calle Ocho Festival, Anime Festival Orlando, and Biketoberfest. Florida is a hub for major sports, with 3 NFL teams, 2 MLB teams, 2 NBA teams, 2 NHL teams, and 4 MLS teams. No matter where your fandom lies, you’ll find plenty to cheer for!

Florida is full of free and affordable events that take place throughout the year. Finding activities your family enjoys is a great way to build connections in your community and maintain a positive work–life balance. Once you're settled into a new city in Florida, you’re sure to find fulfilling family experiences you and your whole family can enjoy.

Wildlife and Outdoor Adventures

Given the great weather year-round, you and your family may find yourself spending more time outdoors than ever before. Florida residents can look forward to trips to the beach, camping, fishing, boating, and hiking all year long.

Florida is also home to a diverse ecosystem of wildlife. In fact, there are over 269 animal species you can only find in Florida. From the tranquil depths of the Everglades to the vibrant shores of the Keys, the allure of Miami Beach, Florida, offers an array of adventures awaiting exploration. Whether it's a weekend getaway or an extended excursion, the state presents diverse opportunities for leisure and discovery.

Are your bags packed and your curiosity piqued? We don't blame you! While you explore Florida’s vibrant cities, neighborhoods, and school districts, don't forget to plan and budget for your move. With a comprehensive plan and affordable movers by your side, you can reduce moving costs and achieve stress-free relocation to your new home in Florida.
