Watch the past and future collide in the storied streets once built by necessity, now reimagined with purpose and pride, of Liberty Square, a landmark with roots in survival and a new chapter shaped by design.

Constructed under the New Deal by the Public Works Administration, Liberty Square, often referred to as the "Pork & Beans," opened its doors in 1937 as the first 753-unit public housing project for African Americans during segregation, set deep in the heart of Liberty City.

Today, the 55-acre Miami-Dade County Public Housing site is a redeveloping mixed-use community that will bring a total of 793 public, workforce, and project-based voucher units, bordered by Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard/North 62nd Street to the south, North 67th Street to the north, State Road 933 (Northwest 12th Avenue) to the east, and Northwest 15th Avenue to the west.

Liberty Square is home to approximately 565 residents as of the latest US Census.

Once defined by red barracks and narrow paths, Liberty Square may be one of Miami's oldest public housing communities, yet it continuously evolves, even as it honors its legacy and history.

Within its core, you'll find families, elders, and new generations that call Liberty Square home—a growing mix of residents that share its walkable streets, updated housing, and vibrant transformation from a symbol of segregation into a model of progress and renewal.

But even as its physical layout continues to be reimagined, redefining what public housing can look like, Liberty Square's soul and spirit remain in the bright modern buildings that now sit where the old units once stood, as each new amenity ties the people that live in this historical enclave to something lasting and forward-facing.

But while the revitalized Liberty Square is still in the works, locals don't have to wander far for a splash of green, a dose of history, or cultural flavor to dive into, as some of Miami's most meaningful spots are already just around the block!

An example of this is Charles Hadley Park, a local park that provides a leafy spot to unwind between work, school pickups, and weekend errands.

At Charles Hadley Park, Little League games play out under the sun, joggers loop the track, and neighbors turn casual strolls into full-on catch-ups amidst over 30 acres of athletic fields, basketball courts, a pool, and shady walking paths.

There's also the nearby Tacolcy Park, a longtime neighborhood staple that doubles as a sports hub and community connector, thanks to its playgrounds, basketball courts, and year-round youth programs, where weekday routines blend into weekend energy.

For something Instagram-worthy and culture-forward, step outside your door and spot the 36 ceramic tile murals by Xavier Cortada; thoughtful pieces tucked into building entrances that offer a quiet but powerful nod to Liberty Square's evolving identity.

Likewise, Liberty City's streets boast meaningful art in bold colors, all honoring Black icons, community heroes, and its proud legacy—just hop in your car, drive, and take your pick!

Of course, these visuals are only the beginning.

Set your sights on Overtown for a deeper dive into Miami's Black history, a neighboring community home to spots such as the Black Police Precinct and Courthouse MuseumDana A. Dorsey Houseand the historic Lyric Theater, each packed with stories of resistance, pride, and cultural brilliance that shaped the city from the inside out.

And while you're there, don't forget to treat yourself to a little retail reward on your way back to Liberty City!

Start with  Upper Buena Vista, a dreamy little hideaway that features indie fashion, eco-conscious goods, and a boho vibes mix under banyan trees and string lights.

You can also go for something sleeker and high-style at the Miami Design District, a lifestyle mecca filled with bold architecture, luxury labels, and public art installations to turn a shopping run into a photo opportunity, one after the other.

Meanwhile, for big brands, cozy cafés, and casual eatsShops at Midtown Miami hits the spot, just minutes away!

Or, you can skip them altogether and keep shopping closer to home at The Shoppes of Liberty City, which offers grocery staples, local boutiques, and corner-store gems!

The good thing about Liberty Square's no-frills location is it's the perfect launchpad for exploring some of Miami's most character-rich neighborhoods, each offering its own vibe, flavor, and reasons to return.

Head west to Allapattah, where old warehouses have turned into trendy eateries and art spaces that blend grit with creativity, north into West Little River for a quieter pace and residential charm, or cruise east toward Little Haiti, where the streets are alive with Caribbean color, culture, and a rhythm that's hard to resist.

Nestled at the crossroads of history and momentum, Liberty Square is carving out its future one block, one mural, and one neighbor at a time.

And whether you're passing through, returning home, or seeing it for the very first time, there's never been a better moment to witness everything it's becoming.

If you've been contemplating moving to Liberty Square, there's no better time than NOW!

With four of nine revitalization phases complete by early 2025, Liberty Square is well on its way to becoming one of Miami's most ambitious mixed-income housing projects.

Yes, these modern apartment layouts and refurbished public spaces, all slowly redefining what affordable housing in Miami can look (and feel) like, aren't the only exciting changes coming to this landmark community!

Think approximately 1,800 to 1,900 residential units in a selection of townhomes and garden-style apartments designed to preserve dignity, increase density, and invite diversity, most with updated interiors, central AC, energy-efficient appliances, and private green spaces to combine practicality with quality.

And the prices? Far more accessible than Miami's typical housing chaos.

These current Liberty Square units are mostly income-restricted to offer relief to families earning below the area's median income, and future phases will welcome a broader range of renters seeking a stable, well-connected place to call home.

Even better, the entire community is being reimagined with amenities that go beyond the basics.

Liberty Square will soon bear on-site early childhood centers, community meeting spaces, public art installations, and retail components meant to keep life walkable and engaging.

Plans are also in motion for green courtyards, safe play zones, and possibly a dedicated park or gathering space as part of its landscape-forward vision, which means less concrete and more connection.

Education-wise, Liberty Square families have Miami-Dade County public schools just minutes away, with nearby options that include Charles Drew K–8 Center, Liberty City Elementary, and Miami Northwestern Senior High, a school with deep local pride and a marching band that has a fan base.

You'll also find smaller charter schools and private academies scattered nearby for those seeking alternative options, along with afterschool programs and youth centers that are staples in the neighborhood fabric.

And when it comes to healthcare, Liberty Square is just a short drive from some of the county's best-known facilities, such as Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami Health System, which are easily reachable by car or public transit.

Meanwhile, clinics and urgent care centers dot the surrounding blocks for everyday needs.

Speaking of getting around, Liberty Square's location might be one of its most underrated perks.

Flanked by major arteries like NW 12th Avenue and NW 62nd Street, and just a couple blocks west of I-95, the neighborhood sits at a transit sweet spot, as Metrobus routes thread through the area, and Liberty City itself is less than 15 minutes from Downtown Miami, Wynwood, and the Design District, which means your commute, errands, or Friday night plans are never too far off.

Put it all together, and you've got a neighborhood in motion, not just physically, but emotionally and culturally.

Needless to say, Liberty Square is no longer just a housing complex— it's a reimagined cornerstone of Liberty City's future, where old roots and new growth share the same soil.

Liberty Square may have started as a product of necessity, but its future is being shaped with vision, care, and community at its core.

What once stood as a symbol of survival is now becoming a model for what progress can look like without erasing history—a rarity in Miami's ever-evolving landscape.

With every new building, park, mural, and resident milestone, this corner of Liberty City continuously writes its next chapter—one that's rooted, rising, and ready.

Whether you're passing through or planting roots, you'll feel the story in the sidewalks.

And trust us, it's one worth following.
