Uncover the quirky twists, unexpected fame, and offbeat moments that have shaped Sunrise, a thriving cosmopolitan city in the heart of the Tri-County region.
Let curiosity lead the way as you peel back the layers of Sunrise, a city with a strong economy, top-tier entertainment, diverse residential communities, and irresistible urban charm.
Bordered north by Tamarac, the suburb of Plantation to its south, the Fort Lauderdale community of Lauderhill to its east, and the Everglades sprawling endlessly to the west, Sunrise serves as a gateway to many residential, business, entertainment, and cultural opportunities within and around its perimeters.
This allows Sunrise to live up to its name, especially in its natural beauty, lush landscaping, and long-standing commitment to developing and maintaining itself as a self-sufficient locale that preserves its past as it plans the future.
Yet beyond its recognizable landmarks and thriving suburban lifestyle, there's an untold side of Sunrise, one with a blend of fun, mystery, and a few "Wait, that happened?" moments, ready to be revealed!
And we're giving you the best seat in the house!
Here are five things you may not know about Sunrise.

A Strategic Name Change
Naming a city might seem easy, but in the 1960s, the developers in Sunrise nearly made a catastrophic branding mistake.
So, what was Sunrise's original name, you ask?
Well, this city's supposed name was Sunset Village.
It sounded peaceful — too peaceful, like an address belonging to a retirement village (no offense)!
Realizing it might not be the best sales pitch, they went with Sunrise Golf Village instead, eventually dropping "Golf Village" and making "Sunrise" this suburban slice's official name.

The House That "Flipped the Script" Literally
Forget virtual reality — Sunrise had immersive marketing stunts before it was even considered cool!
In the 1960s, developer Norman Johnson had a wild idea: build a fully furnished upside-down house to grab buyers' attention.
We're talking about a fully-flipped home with furniture stuck to the ceiling, an upside-down car in the driveway, and enough visual confusion to make your brain short-circuit.
The stunt was so outrageous it landed in Life magazine, and people flocked to see it.
Did they buy homes in Sunrise after seeing the architectural mind-bender? They did.
So, take this innovative developer's "advice" — if you can't sell a house, turn it upside down and confuse people into moving in.

From Sinatra to Sunday Service
Back in the day, Sunrise had a concert scene that rivaled major cities in The Sunrise Musical Theater, a highly anticipated destination that opened in 1976.
And this wasn't just any venue — The Sunrise Musical Theater hosted absolute legends like Frank Sinatra, Elton John, and The Police before giant arenas took over.
But just when it seemed like Sunrise had secured its spot in the music world, the unexpected happened: the theater became a worship center.
One day, the people who were rocking out to "Roxanne" were raising their hands in praise.
Is it a plot twist? Absolutely.
But hey, whether you're singing along to The Police or singing in the choir, at least you know the acoustics are ALWAYS solid.

Lost and (Eventually) Found on Google Maps
Imagine waking up one morning, searching for your city on Google Maps — and finding that it's now in Sarasota(???).
That's what happened in 2010 when Sunrise mysteriously vanished from Google Maps — not once or twice, but three times!
For a while, it seemed like Sunrise was stuck in some digital Bermuda Triangle of sorts, leaving locals to explain, "Yes, I live in Sunrise. No, I'm not lost, and it's not in Sarasota. Yes, I know it's missing from the map."
Google eventually fixed the glitch, but for a brief moment, Sunrise had an existential crisis: If a city isn't on the map, does it even exist?

No to Epic Sunrises, Yes to ICONIC Sunsets!
You'd think a place named Sunrise would have amazing sunrises, but the joke's on all of us!
On the contrary, the "real showstopper" happens at sunset, at least on this side of town.
Since the Sunrise is inland, you won't find oceanfront sunrise views like in Miami Beach.
Here, the evening sky explodes in pinks, oranges, and purples, turning the lakes and parks into a photographer's dream.
Want the best seat in the house? Locals swear by Markham Park, Sawgrass Sanctuary, and the high-rises near Metropica as prime sunset-watching spots.
So, next time someone asks where to catch a killer sunrise in Sunrise, just tell them: "Stick around till evening — it only gets better from there."
