But there's more to Plantation than meets the eye!
Dig deeper into its layers and discover a past filled with unexpected twists, quirky traditions, and stories that make Plantation one of a kind.
And we're here to spill the details!
Here are five things you may not know about Plantation.

What's in a Name? A Rice Plantation That Wasn't!
Contrary to what most think (or what it might seem), Plantation's name wasn't plucked out of thin air.
The name has roots (pun intended) in an ambitious but ill-fated rice-growing experiment back in 1909.
Set out to turn swampy land into a rice paradise, the Everglades Plantation Company planned the project but failed as the land was too wet, too wild, and just not cut out for a booming rice industry.
But while the company vanished, the name "Plantation" stuck around, and instead of rice fields, the area blossomed into a thriving city, proving that sometimes, the best plans are the ones that don't work initially.
Sure, there aren't any rice paddies in sight, but there's still plenty of growth in Plantation — just of a very different kind.

Budgeting on a Shoestring
When Plantation officially became a city on April 23, 1953, things were..., modest.
The population? A whopping 300 people.
The city's budget? Less than $2,000 — barely enough to buy a used car today.
But what Plantation lacked in cash, it made up for in heart, thanks to Mayor Ellsworth D. Gage and the first city council's dedication to growth and development.
Nope, they weren't in it for the paycheck (in fact, they didn't even get one!).
Their determination laid the foundation for the vibrant city that exists today.
So next time you see Plantation's beautiful parks, bustling streets, and thriving businesses, remember — it all started with a budget that couldn't even cover a decent vacation.

The Tree That Took Over
Back in 1976, when the entire country was celebrating its 200th birthday, Plantation marked the occasion with something lasting that served as an ode to their breathtaking surroundings — an impressive 45-foot oak tree.
Yet, it wasn't an ordinary oak tree but a Liberty tree, a symbol of freedom and resilience, planted in what was then called Fifth Street Park and later renamed Liberty Tree Park to give the grand oak its rightful spotlight.
Decades later, the tree still stands tall, a living, leafy reminder of history — and possibly the best picnic spot in town with REALLY good shade!

Grills, Thrills, and Fire Drills
If there's one thing Plantation takes seriously, it's barbecue.
And how do we know that you ask?
Well, since 1956, this city has fired up the grills for an annual Volunteer Firefighter BBQ — a highly anticipated event that isn't just your usual backyard cookout.
If anything, this fundraiser has become a time-honored tradition, one where the aroma of slow-smoked meats fills the air, neighbors come together, and firefighters trade their hoses for tongs, as Plantation celebrates community, volunteerism, and the people who help keep the city safe!
Yes, folks, the Annual Volunteer Firefighter BBQ isn't just about food (though it's a significant perk!) — it's a Plantation signature!
So, if you're attending, bring your appetite and lots of napkins!

Lights, Camera, Action... in Plantation?
Hollywood has a habit of popping up in unexpected places — and Plantation wasn't spared from the limelight!
In fact, the city has played a "behind-the-scenes" role in some iconic films, proving that you don't need to be in L.A. to make movie magic.
Have you ever seen Caddyshack? That legendary pool scene? Filmed at the Plantation Country Club.
Or how about There's Something About Mary? That high school flashback? Shot at Plantation City Hall!
Whether it's golf comedy classics or rom-com nostalgia, Plantation has had its fair share of close-ups.
Who knows? Maybe the next blockbuster will have a little Plantation cameo, too!
