Marry Florida's most iconic landscapes with unparalleled suburban living as you embrace a LIFETIME of nature, peace, and non-stop outdoor adventures in Florida City, "The Gateway to the Florida Keys and Everglades!"

Dive into the treasure trove of greens and blues within the pristine oasis of Florida City, a suburban residential gem to the south and west of and contiguous with Homestead, 18 miles southwest of Kendall and 28 miles southwest of Miami City.

Offering a more subdued, rural vibe, which is considered a far cry from Magic City's famed high-spirited identity, alongside a tight-knit community, a vibrant small-town shopping scene, a list of homegrown eateries,  and an endless display of Mother Nature's beauty, Florida City serves as a peaceful break from the city life and a prime neighborhood for those who dream of living a nature-inspired vacation EVERY SINGLE DAY — while being moments away from the action of urban Miami!

Indeed, Florida City isn't called "The Gateway to the Florida Keys and Everglades" for no reason!

So, if you're looking for a more peaceful lifestyle brimming with nature, peace, and loads of outdoor fun or have just started transitioning to Florida City's unique blend of agricultural abundance and creature conveniences, congratulations on making an informed decision!

Now, it's time to ease into your NEW suburban life the smoothest way possible by setting up your Florida City ESSENTIALS!

Here are 7 things you need to do IMMEDIATELY when moving to Florida City.

     (1)

Moving To The Suburbs: What Each Florida City Home Should Have

The suburban way of life isn't any different from city living apart from having more greens and less pollution, especially if you're moving to a Miami suburb like Florida City, so before your big move-in date, sort out your utilities to ensure maximum convenience during your transition!

    Don't know where to start?

No need to panic —all you need is a stable internet connection, your IDs, and a few minutes of your time because setting up your electricity, natural gas, and water services in Florida City is as easy as 1, 2, 3!

For your electricity, create or log in to your existing account at the  Florida Power & Light Company (FPL)  website and apply for service at your new address.

If you're a new customer, you'll need to submit your Social Security, Driver's License, Social Insurance, or Tax ID number, the new service address, and the connection date, or if you're already an existing FPL customer,  the disconnection date (old address), re-connection date,  and complete service address will suffice.

A deposit of $25 (minimum) and other initial set-up fees may be charged upfront, whether you're a new or existing customer.

Meanwhile, check with  TECO Peoples Gas  or   Florida City Gas (FCG)  for your natural gas services!

Once you've confirmed service availability, submit the necessary IDs and connection date (new customer) or advise the disconnection date, the complete address of your new home, and your preferred service transfer date (existing customer).

Deposit fees may be based on your home's square footage or equal to twice the average monthly bill, and you may need to settle a connection fee before service connection.

To top it all off, check for water and sewer availability at your new address on the  Miami-Dade Water & Sewer  website.

New customers must create an online account and deposit $50 for water, $50 for sewer, and a non-refundable $45 connection fee, and existing owners must also settle any outstanding balance before service transfer.

     (2)

Staying Connected In Miami's Outskirts: The Essentials Of A Modern Homeowner

Do you want to make your Florida City transition a hundred times better?

Feel like you never left the city with a premium internet connection and a binge-watch of your favorite TV shows!

Yes, peeps, living in the suburbs doesn't mean leaving your modern must-haves behind, including reliable internet and cable services, so before your Florida City move, check service providers like  Comcast Xfinity  and   AT&T  for the best internet-cable bundles!

Upon picking your provider and preferred package, apply for new service by submitting your complete address and proper IDs online or in person at the nearest store, or if you're an existing Comcast or AT&T customer, request for a service transfer as soon as you settle any remaining balance on your account!

You may have to settle deposits, activation/installation, and equipment rental fees upfront or see them on the first bill, so avoid any surprises by asking your provider!

     (3)

Planting Your Florida Roots: The ID Every Floridian NEEDS

If you think moving to Florida is the final step to becoming an honorary Floridian, you've got another thing coming!

Before you can show off your new city, you'll have to PROVE that you're really from Florida!

And how do you do that, you ask?

By sealing the deal with a Florida driver's license — and STAT!

Yes, folks, a Florida driver's license is not only a REQUIREMENT within 30 days of establishing residency, but it's also the quickest Florida ID to get and your ticket to driving on Florida roads!

So, if you're moving from another country or state, visit the nearest  Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV)  or any local office offering driver's license services and apply for a driver's license by submitting the necessary documents.

Click on the applicable residency status to know which documents to have on hand when you apply:

    •  U.S Citizen
    • Immigrant
    • Non-Immigrant
    •  Canadian

The initial Florida Class E license, including a learner's permit, is $48.00, a commercial driver's license (Class A) is $75.00, and an ID Card fee is $25.00.

For a complete list of driver's license fees,  click here.

Drivers with current or previous driver's licenses from another state, country, or jurisdiction may be allowed to forego mandatory Drug and Alcohol courses, the Class E Knowledge exam, and the Florida Driving test, but the Vision and Hearing test is still a MUST.

Meanwhile, if you already have a Florida driver's license, you'll still need to notify the DMV of your new address to get an updated driver's license.

Oh, and get insurance to title and register your vehicle(s), too, within ten (10) days of establishing residency, if you don't want to get in trouble with the law!

     (4)

Nurturing The Citizens Of Tomorrow: Opening Florida City's Treasure Trove of Schools

Are you joining the Florida City community with a couple of school-aged kiddos in tow?

Well, you can take "find a school" off your checklist because Florida City has tons of options, from primary to senior high school!

We're talking about a treasure trove of public, charter, and private schools, including some of Miami's best educational institutions like Miami Community Charter School, Lincoln-Marti Charter Schools International Campus, Avant School of Excellence, and Charter High School of the Americas - Florida City Campus — and that's just the tip of the iceberg!

So, if you still need more information to make an informed decision for your child's future, read our blog,  Schools in Florida City , or visit the  Miami-Dade County Public Schools  website for public schools near your new address!

Meanwhile, if you're looking for childcare services, click  Daycares in Florida City  for your options!

     (5)

Joining The Train Of Success: Voting In Florida City

Are you moving to Florida City from a different country?

A legal-aged United States citizen who meets all the requirements but is STILL an unregistered voter?

If your answer is yes to any, don't forget to register to vote before you move into your new community!

To jumpstart your voter registration, submit your application with the proper IDs and documents through the  Florida Department of State  or the  Miami-Dade County Elections Department  online, by mail, or in person at the Elections Department or any Elections Branch office!

Just bring any current and valid identification with a photograph and signature (e.g., Florida Driver's License, United States passport, etc.), and you'll be approved in no time!

For questions about other legal forms of identification and supplementary requirements,  c lick here.

     (6)

A Greener Florida City: Welcoming Your New Life With Sustainability

Florida City is dedicated to maintaining its natural beauty, cleanliness, and order.

As a new member, you're expected to familiarize yourself, follow, and participate in keeping this beautiful suburban paradise at its BEST version!

To start your journey as an honorary Florida City resident, take note of the community's recycling and waste management programs, including the trash, solid waste, and recycling schedules!

Doing so will not only preserve Florida City's lush green spaces and alluring environment but also keep the community the safest and as trash-free as possible!

Here are the current solid waste, "bulky" garbage, and recyclables schedules in Florida City:

    •  Garbage & trash collection (twice a week)
    • Free recycling collection every other week
    •  "Bulky" trash collection (once a week)

Failure to follow these waste management codes will result in a $500 fine or arrest.

For more information about schedules and fees, visit the   City of Miami Solid Waste Department  website.
