Reel in South Florida's rich history and natural beauty as you ease into a new way of life in Cutler Bay, a welcoming suburban oasis embellished with scenic views, majestic homes, abundant outdoor recreation, and limitless opportunities to explore and connect!

Elevating Southern Miami-Dade with its community-centric culture, small-town appeal, and irresistible natural beauty is the coastal paradise of Cutler Bay, a young municipality bordered north by Palmetto Bay and west of Biscayne Bay, near the communities of Pinecrest, Kendall, Goulds, and South Miami Heights.

Much like most Miami suburbs, days spent in Cutler Bay are mostly tourist-free, save for a few outdoor aficionados and nature lovers, despite its abundance of scenic landscapes, historical landmarks, verdant parks, and proximity to the water.

But truth be told, this fact makes Cutler Bay one of Miami's most family-friendly communities, attracting an active and growing, suburb-loving population with a bountiful environment, rich green parks, expansive outdoor spaces, and convenient amenities, including a competitive collection of schools, community centers, and prime real estate, rental or otherwise!

So, if you've been contemplating moving to Cutler Bay or have already made the first step to transitioning to this suburban oasis, hats off TO YOU!

By following these simple tips, you'll find yourself embracing a lifestyle where community and nature go hand in hand in NO TIME!

Here are 7 things you need to do IMMEDIATELY when moving to Cutler Bay.

(1)

Warming Up, Cooling Off, And Everything In Between: Organizing Your Cutler Bay Utilities

Moving into your new Cutler Bay home sans the essentials?

Let me stop you there!

Though it may look overwhelming, sorting your utilities in Cutler Bay, let alone in the whole Sunshine State, can be pretty easy!

It's all about finding the right guide! *wink*

To set up your electricity, log into your existing Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) website account to request a service transfer to your new address — you'll only need to advise FPL of the date of disconnection (old address), the date of re-connection, and the complete address of your new home.

However, if you're moving from a different state or country, submit an online application with your Social Security, Driver's License, Social Insurance, or Tax ID number, the complete service address, and the connection date.

A deposit of $25 (minimum) and initial set-up fees may be charged before service connection, whether you're a new or existing FPL customer.

For your natural gas service, check for service availability with TECO Peoples Gas and Florida City Gas (FCG) — once confirmed, you can submit the necessary IDs and date of connection through your newly created online account, or if you're an existing consumer, advise TECO or FCG of the disconnection date (old address), re-connection date, and the new address.

Charges may include deposit fees based on your home's square footage or equal to twice the average monthly bill and a connection fee.

And for the finale, check for water and sewer availability on the Miami-Dade Water & Sewer website!

After confirmation, just create an online account and deposit $50 for water, $50 for sewer, and a non-refundable $45 connection fee, or settle any outstanding balance on your account if you're requesting a service transfer!

Clued Up In Cutler Bay: Staying In The Loop After Moving Cities

Scared of feeling homesick after moving to Cutler Bay?

Don't forget to arrange the cable and internet services at your new address before your expected move-in date!

If you haven't yet, well, don't fret — getting an internet and cable bundle around Cutler Bay is pretty hassle-free (much like in all other cities in Miami), so you can do it even AFTER you settle in, that is, if you can handle a few days without chatting up the fam!

Meanwhile, for the best internet-cable bundles around, check Comcast Xfinity and AT&T!

After you've scoured through their newest promos, apply for a new service online or in person at the nearest store, submit your complete address, supplement your application with proper IDs, and wait for the installers!

You can also have your existing service transferred to your new address if you're already with Comcast or AT&T after you settle any remaining balance on your account!

Please note that there may be upfront charges like deposits, activation/installation, and equipment rental fees.

Doing Like The Floridians: Your New Florida Driver's License

Do you want to secure an all-pass "ticket" to all scenic roads and highways across Florida?

Getting a Florida driver's license is KEY!

Aside from being a REQUIREMENT within 30 days of establishing residency, driving around Florida without one will get you in trouble with the law, so don't even try!

So, if you're coming from another country or state, visit the nearest Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) or any local office offering driver's license services, apply for a Florida driver's license, and submit the necessary documents.

Click on the applicable residency status to know which documents to have on hand when you apply:

The initial Florida Class E license, including a learner's permit, is $48.00, a commercial driver's license (Class A) is $75.00, and an ID Card fee is $25.00.

For a complete list of driver's license fees, click here.

Meanwhile, if you already have a Florida driver's license, notify the DMV to get a new license with your updated address — it's a MUST and punishable by law.

If you already have a current or previous driver's license from another state, country, or jurisdiction, taking the Vision and Hearing test is still a MUST, but you may be allowed to skip the mandatory Drug and Alcohol courses and the Class E Knowledge exam.

You'll also want to get insurance to title and register your vehicle(s) within ten (10) days of establishing residency so you can keep on driving your car in Florida!

Are you looking for the BEST way to immerse yourself within Cutler Bay's tight-knit community?

Well, it's pretty easy, really — just exercise your right to vote!

So, if you're of legal age and are a United States citizen who meets all the requirements, submit your application and the proper IDs and documents through the Florida Department of State or the Miami-Dade County Elections Department online, by mail, or in person at the Elections Department or any Elections Branch office!

Any current and valid identification with a photograph and signature (e.g., Florida Driver's License, United States passport, etc.) should be enough to approve your registration!

Joining Hands With The Community: Keeping Cutler Bay Clean, Green, And Pristine

A significant part of being a member of the community is not just observing rules and regulations but also keeping them to heart.

And now that you're an honorary resident of Cutler Bay, it's time you familiarize yourself with the "house rules," including proper disposal and Cutler Bay's effort in waste and recycling management!

The Town of Cutler Bay - Public Works, assisted by the City of Miami Solid Waste Department, provides residents with collection and disposal of solid waste, including garbage and yard waste.

With this, all Bay Harbor Islands community members observe proper garbage collection and recycling schedules, which are as follows:

  • Residential garbage collection - twice a week
  • Free recycling collection - every other week
  • Two (2) free "bulky" trash collections once a year.

There may be coordinating fees for trash collection, so please consult with your HOA management.

Failure to follow these waste management codes will result in a $500 fine or arrest.
