Sail into a new chapter with a sense of calm and confidence as we tell you everything you need to know about starting life in Bay Heights, one of Miami's best-kept secrets.

Welcome to Bay Heights, a discreet, high-demand neighborhood with a limited collection of spacious mid-century modern and contemporary residences, many of which sit on larger lots compared to those in Central and South Coconut Grove, that has built a reputation on its unique blend of privacy, security, and convenience, enhanced by the graceful presence of Coconut Grove's iconic peacocks.

Spanning an estimated 25 to 30 acres, Bay Heights sits between Coconut Grove's cultural core and Brickell's bustling avenues, with nearby parks, waterfront access, and city conveniences forming a natural perimeter just minutes from the best of Magic City.

Its combination of location, residential scale, and understated appeal has steadily earned Bay Heights recognition as a sought-after neighborhood for those who want accessibility without sacrificing a true sense of place.

Making the move to Bay Heights? Now it's time to get oriented, explore your surroundings, and take care of the key steps that help transform a new address into your forever home.

Here are 7 things you need to do IMMEDIATELY when moving to Bay Heights.

(1)

Welcome Home — Sort Of: Setting Up Your Utilities in Bay Heights

Moving into Bay Heights becomes official the moment you walk through the door.

But getting the lights on, the water flowing, and everything working the way it should is what makes your home livable.

So, if you haven't set up your utilities yet, then this tip is for YOU!

For electricity, visit the Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) website and create a new account or log in to an existing one to request a service connection or transfer.

New customers must provide identification such as a Social Security number, driver's license, state ID, or Tax ID, along with the complete Bay Heights service address and preferred connection date.

Existing FPL customers, on the other hand, only need to submit the disconnection date for their previous address, the reconnection date, and the complete address of their new Bay Heights home.

That said, both new and existing customers may be required to pay a minimum deposit of $25 and any applicable setup fees before service activation.

If your home uses natural gas, check availability through providers such as TECO Peoples Gas or Florida City Gas (FCG).

After confirming service availability, new customers must submit the required identification and desired connection date through their online account, while existing customers should provide their previous disconnection date, reconnection date, and updated Bay Heights address.

Deposits are typically calculated based on the home's size and average usage and may equal twice the estimated monthly bill, apart from a connection fee.

Lastly, confirm water and sewer availability through the Miami-Dade Water & Sewer website, create an online account, and submit a $50 water deposit, a $50 sewer deposit, and a non-refundable $45 connection fee.

Existing homeowners are also required to settle any outstanding balance before the selected transfer date.

Connected Living by the Bay: Internet & Cable, Simplified

Work, streaming, messages, and everyday life all run through one connection now, which is why setting up internet and cable is a key part of settling into Bay Heights living.

If you're still comparing plans or looking for a reliable bundle, start with established providers like Comcast Xfinity and AT&T, both of which service the Bay Heights area with a range of internet speeds and cable options.

Once you've chosen a package, new customers can apply for service online or visit a nearby store to open an account by providing a valid ID, their complete Bay Heights address, and a preferred installation or activation date to get started.

Existing Xfinity or AT&T customers can also request a service transfer to their new Bay Heights address, provided they settle any outstanding balance on the account prior to the move.

Be aware that deposits, activation or installation fees, and equipment rental fees may be charged upfront or appear on your first billing statement, depending on the service plan selected.

Crossing State Lines: Getting Your Florida Driver's License

A new address in a new state comes with a few required updates, and getting a Florida driver's license is one of the most important ones.

If you're moving to Bay Heights and already hold a valid Florida driver's license, you'll only need to notify the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) of your address change to receive an updated license.

However, if you're relocating from another state, Florida law requires you to apply for a Florida driver's license within 30 days of establishing residency to legally drive on Florida roads.

Once you've gathered the required documents, visit your nearest FLHSMV office or any local location that offers driver's license services to complete the application process in person.

Applicants who currently hold — or previously held — a driver's license from another U.S. state, country, or jurisdiction may be exempt from Florida's Drug and Alcohol course, the Class E Knowledge exam, and the road test.

That said, vision and hearing tests are still required for all applicants.

Don't forget to take care of vehicle insurance, titling, and registration as well — Florida requires new residents to title and register their vehicles within 10 days of establishing residency.

For a full list of required documents based on residency status, be sure to review the appropriate category before your appointment:

The initial Florida Class E license, including a learner's permit, is $48.00, a commercial driver's license (Class A) is $75.00, and an ID Card fee is $25.00.

When Your Address Becomes Your VOICE: Voting In and For Bay Heights

At some point, living in a new place turns into wanting a say in how it grows.

For Bay Heights residents, voting is one of the easiest ways to take part.

If you're eligible and ready to register, Florida allows voters to submit their registration through the Florida Department of State or the Miami-Dade County Elections Department, either online, by mail, or in person at an elections office.

You only need valid identification, such as a Florida driver's license, a U.S. passport, or another current form of ID that includes a photograph and signature.

Once registered, you'll be officially added to the voter rolls and eligible to participate in local, state, and national elections that affect Bay Heights and the surrounding communities.

If you're unsure about acceptable forms of identification, voter eligibility requirements, or registration deadlines, click here and make an informed decision.

Voting is a tiny step with lasting impact — one that connects daily life in Bay Heights to the decisions shaping its future.

The Bay Heights Trash Manual: What Goes Out, When, and How

You don't notice a trash system until you need it, and Bay Heights operates on a strict schedule that every resident must follow.

To save you the time of tracking it down, here's a clear guide to Bay Heights trash and recycling days, so you can familiarize yourself with the waste collection and recycling services managed by the City of Miami Solid Waste Department, which oversees residential pickup throughout Bay Heights:

  • Residential Garbage Collection: Twice a week, with specific days depending on your address *use the Miami-Dade Geographic Information System (GIS) tool to confirm the exact days*
  • Recycling Collection: Every other week, at no additional cost
  • "Bulky" Trash Collection: Once a week

Please note that improper disposal or violations of the city's waste management rules may result in fines.

Staying informed and following the schedule helps keep Bay Heights clean, orderly, and running smoothly.
