And before you jump into everything this community has to offer, let's walk through the key steps that will help make your move to South Miami Heights smooth and enjoyable, like the inviting lifestyle that awaits you.

Here are 7 things you need to do IMMEDIATELY when moving to South Miami Heights.

(1)

Turn Your South Miami Heights Address Into a Working Home

Moving into your new South Miami Heights place without the basics?

That's not the best way to commence your new chapter.

Sorting your utilities in South Miami Heights — and really anywhere in Miami-Dade — is much simpler than it looks once you know exactly where to click, request, and confirm.

And lucky you, you're about to know.

Start with your electricity through Florida Power & Light Company (FPL).

If you already have an FPL account, request a service transfer to your new South Miami Heights home, and advise them of your old disconnection date, new activation date, and new complete address — you can do this online in minutes.

Coming from out of state (or out of the country)? Open a new FPL account and provide your Social Security, Driver's License, Tax ID, or Social Insurance number, full service address, and your preferred connection date.

Expect a minimum deposit of $25 and standard setup charges, whether you're new or transferring.

If your home uses natural gas, availability in South Miami Heights depends on Florida City Gas (FCG).

Once you confirm service for your street, create an account (or update your existing one) and submit your IDs along with your connection date.

Deposits vary and are tied to the square footage or the same amount as two months of average service, plus a standard connection fee.

After that, it's time to have the water and sewer side ticked off.

Head to the Miami-Dade Water & Sewer Department website to check availability for your new address.

Once you confirm, you can set up an online account and pay the required deposits: $50 for water, $50 for sewer, and a $45 non-refundable connection fee.

If you're transferring service, settle any outstanding balance, or they won't process the move.

With those done, your South Miami Heights home officially moves on from "just moved in" to fully functioning—literally and figuratively.

Plug Into South Miami Heights With a Connection That Keeps Up

Are you worried you'll feel a little disconnected once your new life in South Miami Heights begins?

Well, we have a quick fix, and it involves getting your internet and cable set up before move-in day.

And what do you know? Setting up service in South Miami Heights is as stress-free as counting 1 to 3, so you don't have to miss your daily video calls and weekend streaming marathons.

For reliable bundles and solid speeds, your best bets in this area are Comcast Xfinity and AT&T—browse their latest promos online, compare packages, then apply either through their website or at a nearby store.

You must provide your full South Miami Heights address and valid identification, and then wait for the installation team to swing by.

Already with Xfinity or AT&T? You can transfer your existing service to your new address once you pay any remaining balance on your account.

Note that deposits, installation or activation fees, and equipment charges may apply, whether you're signing up or transferring internet & cable services.

Get Your License in Sync With Your New South Miami Heights Life

Thinking about cruising along Miami-Dade's scenic stretches and zipping through South Miami Heights with ease?

You need a Florida driver's license to make that happen.

Florida requires new residents to secure a state-issued license within 30 days of establishing residency — and driving without one isn't something you want to test.

Really, the fines and legal headaches aren't worth the "I'll do it later."

If you're moving in from another state or from abroad, head to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) or any nearby licensing office, where you'll apply for your Florida license and present the documents that match your residency category.

Check the list that applies to you so you can prep your paperwork ahead of time:

•    U.S Citizen
•
Immigrant
•
Non-Immigrant
•
Canadian

Fees vary depending on what you're applying for: a standard Class E license or learner's permit runs $48, a commercial Class A license is $75, and a Florida ID card is $25.

For anything else, consult the state's full fee list here.

If you already have a Florida license, make sure you update your address after moving to South Miami Heights — it's a legal requirement, not a suggestion.

And if you're bringing a driver's license from another U.S. state or a foreign jurisdiction, you should still pass the Vision and Hearing tests.

On the other hand, you may be exempt from the Drug and Alcohol course and the Class E Knowledge exam, depending on your credentials.

Last step: secure Florida insurance and take care of your vehicle registration and title within 10 days of becoming a resident.

That's how you keep your car fully legal on the road — from your daily South Miami Heights errands to weekend drives across the Sunshine State.

Stay Ahead of Trash Day Before Your Bags Pile Up

Being part of any neighborhood means learning the rules and regulations that keep daily life running smoothly, and South Miami Heights is no exception.

So, now that you've officially made this community your new home, it's a good moment to get acquainted with how waste collection works in South Miami Heights and how Miami-Dade County manages trash, recycling, and bulk pickup across the area.

Miami-Dade County's Department of Solid Waste Management handles regular household garbage, recycling, and scheduled bulk waste collection for most single-family homes.

With that, residents in South Miami Heights follow these general pickup schedules:

  • Residential garbage collection – typically twice a week, on set days by address
  • Recycling collection – every other week, using the county-issued blue recycling cart
  • Bulky trash collection – scheduled curbside pickups that must be logged in advance, with most homes eligible for a limited number of bulky-waste pickups per year.

Some neighborhoods or HOAs may have additional guidelines or fees for waste-related services, so it's helpful to confirm any specific community rules when you move in.

Miami-Dade strictly enforces its waste regulations, which means placing bulk items out early, blocking sidewalks with carts, or mixing prohibited materials with regular trash can lead to fines or citations, so following the schedule keeps your curb and wallet in the clear.
