Step away from the noise and into a more grounded side of Miami as you get settled in Coral Gate, one of Magic City's first planned communities.

Positioned just outside Coral Gables, Coral Gate features a quiet city lifestyle along Coral Way, a road established by Coral Gables founder George E. Merrick during the 1920s.

Within, you're surrounded by tree-lined streets, single-family homes, and a small number of low-rise residences, in a location that puts the BEST of Miami in a heartbeat — or an intense brisk-walking session.

So if you’ve secured a place in this storied slice — or are in the process of doing so — welcome to a neighborhood that prioritizes convenience, stability, and everyday livability.

Moving can feel overwhelming, but we're here to guide you through the essentials and help you settle into Coral Gate with grace and ease.

Here are 7 things you need to do IMMEDIATELY when moving to Coral Gate.

(1)

Coral Gate Move-In Essentials: How to Handle Power, Water, and Gas Like a Local

Everyone knows that before getting settled or unpacking anything, the first priority is ensuring their home functions BEFORE move-in day.

So, if you haven't managed your own set of utilities, take a walk through these instructions to have them all up and running, stress-free.

Electricity in Coral Gate comes from Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), and most residents start by checking whether they already have an FPL account, as existing customers can just log in and request a service transfer by providing the disconnection date for their previous address, the connection date for their Coral Gate home, and the complete service address.

New residents who haven't used FPL before must complete an online application and submit basic identification such as a Social Security number, driver's license, or tax ID, along with the requested start date for service.

In both cases, a minimum deposit and initial setup fees may apply before electricity is activated.

Water and sewer service is managed through the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD), and this step is often overlooked by newcomers.

After confirming availability for your address, new customers are required to create an online account and place separate deposits for water and sewer service, along with a standard connection fee.

Meanwhile, existing customers transferring service must pay any prior balance before the selected activation date.

Once this step is complete, water and sewer services will align with your move-in timeline.

By the way, most Coral Gate homes operate fully on electricity, but for properties that include gas hookups, natural gas service is typically provided by companies such as Florida City Gas or TECO Peoples Gas — availability varies by address, so confirmation is required before moving forward.

New customers will need to submit identification and select a connection date through an online account, while existing customers can request a transfer by providing their old and new service details.

Deposits are often based on estimated usage and home size, along with a standard connection fee.

Connections Matter: Setting Up Internet and Cable After Moving to Coral Gate

After moving into Coral Gate, staying connected isn't a luxury but a part of daily life, especially when you work from home, stream shows, manage schoolwork, or just want reliable service.

In fact, if you ask us, the internet should be among the first things residents lock in after utilities.

In Coral Gate, most homes rely on familiar providers that already serve the area, such as Comcast Xfinity and AT&T, two names locals compare when choosing internet and cable plans, offering a range of speeds and bundles depending on your needs.

Once you've picked a plan, setting up service can be accomplished online or at a nearby store.

New customers must provide their full service address and standard identification, then select an installation or activation date.

If you're transferring service from another address, ensure any remaining balance on the account is settled before the switch.

It's also worth asking about deposits, installation charges, or equipment rental fees that may be due upfront, so you can plan ahead.

Otherwise, expect those charges on your first statement.

New Address, New ID: How to Update or Apply for a Florida Driver's License in Coral Gate

If you're wondering, updating or getting your Florida driver's license isn't optional, like any other state.

In Florida, new residents have 30 days from establishing residency to sort it, and that license becomes their official ID for driving, registering vehicles, and handling day-to-day tasks around the city.

So, if you're among the newbies, visit the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) or another authorized driver's license office in person, submit the required documents, and complete the steps needed to receive a Florida license.

What you bring depends on your residency status, so it's important to check ahead before heading out:

For fees, expect $48 for a standard Class E license (including learner's permits), $75 for a commercial Class A license, and $25 for a Florida ID card.

Drivers who already hold a valid license from another state or country may skip certain exams, such as the written test or driving test.

However, the vision and hearing screening is still required, and everyone must meet Florida's basic eligibility rules before a license is issued.

If you're bringing a car with you, there's another deadline to remember.

Florida requires new residents to title and register their vehicles and secure insurance within 10 days of establishing residency, so this step often goes hand in hand with updating your license.

Meanwhile, those who already have a Florida driver's license only need to notify the DHSMV of their new Coral Gate address so a corrected license can be issued.

Settle In and Speak Up: Voter Registration 101 for Coral Gate Newcomers

Being part of Coral Gate also means having a voice in the decisions that shape the future, from local leadership to state policies.

So, if you're looking for one of the quickest ways residents turn a new address into real community participation, registering to vote is the KEY.

If you're 18 or older, a U.S. citizen, and meet Florida's eligibility rules, voter registration can be accomplished through the Florida Department of State or the Miami-Dade County Elections Department.

Applications are accepted online, by mail, or in person at elections offices and branch locations, making the process flexible, no matter your schedule.

Most registrations only require a valid form of identification that shows both a photo and a signature, such as a Florida driver's license or a U.S. passport.

By the way, anyone who was previously registered in another state should ensure their voter record reflects their new Coral Gate address, as updating this early prevents issues when elections roll around.

Waste Management in Coral Gate: Schedules, Rules, and Responsibilities

A spotless and orderly Coral Gate involves following strict rules and consistent routines week after week.

In fact, the community even handles trash and recycling differently than the rest of Miami, so understanding how collection works early helps avoid missed pickups, fines, or unnecessary headaches.

Coral Gate falls under the City of Miami Solid Waste Department, which oversees garbage, recycling, and bulky waste collection for the neighborhood.

Here's a sneak peek:

  • Garbage & trash collection for single-family homes — Twice per week, with pickup days assigned by address (commonly Monday & Thursday or Tuesday & Friday).
  • Recycling collection — Once per week on a designated day using city-issued recycling bins.
  • Bulky trash collection — Large items such as furniture, mattresses, and appliances must be scheduled through the City of Miami and are collected once a week on the approved date.
  • Multi-family residence trash collection — Apartment buildings and condos follow separate pickup schedules, typically managed through shared dumpsters with collection occurring multiple times per week.

Any violation of city waste or recycling guidelines — including improper disposal, early placement of bulky items, or contamination of recycling bins — may result in fines or enforcement action.

To stay ahead of it all, it's best to confirm your exact pickup schedule through Miami-Dade County Solid Waste Management and check with your HOA or property manager if applicable.

Unlike other communities, life in Coral Gate doesn't stay contained to its boundaries.

In fact, once routines are in place, most new residents like to branch out, taking advantage of Coral Gate’s proximity to parks, landmarks, and well-known destinations across Miami and Coral Gables.

Nature lovers often start close to home at Coral Gate Park, a familiar local space for walks, casual workouts, and downtime outdoors.

For a shift toward culture and history, Coral Gables Museum offers rotating exhibits, architecture-focused storytelling, and a deeper look into how the City Beautiful came to be.

Meanwhile, warm afternoons are usually spent at the iconic Venetian Pool, where spring-fed water and old-world design offer a refreshing break from the Miami heat.

When a slower, heritage-filled experience is the goal, Merrick House provides a serene glimpse at Coral Gables' origins in a beautifully preserved setting.
